Multi-Family Licensing Program Considered
The Village of Skokie Public Safety Commission began discussions on requiring licensing of multiunit rental buildings at its April meeting. Under the proposal, owners of all rental buildings with two or more dwelling units would be required to obtain a license in order to ensure that property standards are upheld, buildings are secure and are managed and maintained in compliance with municipal codes. The proposal is a proactive strategy that maintains the character of Village neighborhoods by ensuring rental buildings are maintained in compliance with Village codes and also furthers community policing.
The Commission will continue their deliberations of the topic at their next meeting scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on May 16, 2012 at Skokie Village Hall, 5127 Oakton Street.

Many 2-flats are owned by eldely who have lived, worked & paid taxes to Skokie for many years. The amount of rent that we receive does not cover the great expenses of keeping the building in good repair, paying the taxes etc. Many of us do not eat well in order to continue paying for the building upkeep.
The additional taxes you propose will only give us additional problems and worries.
SHAME, SHAME trying to burdon us with more expenses, we, who have done so much to make Skokie a village to be proud in which to live. DON'T TAX US ANYMORE THAN WE ARE ALREADY BEING TAXED!!!!!

Sallie,
I am a former multi-unit landlord in Skokie.
You may need to review how you are managing your property, if maintaining it is keeping you from eating well.
The program mentioned is a great idea and a step in the right direction.
There are many, many others who live, work, and pay taxes in Skokie.
They should not suffer the fear and violence that has been noted on this site because landlords are not concerned about public safety, or about who they rent to. Certain landlords have only been concerned about getting that automatic deposit in their accounts from the government.
Unfortunately for you and others, this can no longer go on. This program is the first step (hopefully there will be many more) in bringing Skokie back to its former glory days.
