Many cyclists ride in Skokie. We need a comprehensive, detailed bike lane system through Skokie, connecting to our neighbors north and south especially.

Prayers for the cyclist for a swift recovery. My other thought is, another Main Street accident. It seems be a constant the last few years. Slow down and pay attention people.

The accident happened on Skokie, not Main. Chicago's recent bike lane fatalities makes me question their safety. Traffic engineering cannot overcome the often unsafe actions of roadway users, cyclists and pedestrians included.

Correction... ended on Skokie but started on Main.

I work near that intersection, at the skokie club restaurant. I was told that cyclist was killed. Our heart go out to his family. Side note, I've never understood the rationale of sidewalk cycling!?!

We need to reduce the speed limit on Skokie Boulevard to 25 mph just like Main St . and Oakton. The Skokie can rightfully boast of being a diverse Nanny village.

Cyclist passed away at 1a.m. this morning according to another news site.

I just read on the Trib the man did die and he was 68 and lived in Skokie

It's time to go back to horse and buggy--cars are too dangerous.

Or the Skokie Police could start ticketing south bound Skokie Boulevard between Dempster and Main Street. With a long stretch there, and no stoplights in between it's always a crap shoot pulling onto Skokie Boulevard closer to Main Street. It's not like there are tons of side streets in between where the police could perch and start writing a few.

Everybody's car becomes a race car in that stretch as they "strive" to make the Main Street light headed southbound. And of course, usually they don't. But I guess this lucky driver did! What did he win?

How about we start writing tickets where they should have been writing them for years now. Try around rush hour maybe, eh? Park one of Skokie's "navy blues" facing eastbound down around Lee street and start hauling cash.

Earl...I live a block away from where he was mowed down. I like and respect your opinions...IE. poor Carter Vo killed on or just off Main St. But like you, when you live near these sorts of incidents...you become a "witness" every day of your life.

Should I blame an old man who crossed Skokie Boulevard under the cover of darkness? Try puilling from Elm onto Skokie boulevard or making a left turn onto Elm when northbound on Skokie Blvd.

People drive like fools in this area of Skokie Boulevard every day. I don't want a traffic light between Dempster and Main Sstreet because it truly isn't needed. But between around 3:30 PM to 7:30 PM....it's idiot raceway.

No Earl, I didn't indicate either. Read a little slower it might help. Please don't try and put words in my mouth. I won't put anything in yours. I simply made an observation about what I see occur daily in this location. You drew your own conclusion. What next? I am a racist?

Cyclist need to learn how to use the bike paths which the city / state have spend more then enough money on and get off of the streets.

@ Tyrone Our family is avid bike riders, so could you please inform us where thoes bike paths are? We have had many friends that have been hit by cars and seriously hurt. The only bike "path" that I know of in Skokie runs along the train track by the Skokie Swift and that only about 6 blocks!!!

I've complained about this before... While not a bike "path", there are bike lanes, including on Howard. BUT!!! Constantly, vehicles think the bike path is a passing lane. While I personally haven't seen a bicyclist hit while vehicles are doing this, it is only a matter of time since it seems as if this action is more automatic; I can't imagine they're looking to see if there are actually any bicyclists around. The only solution I've seen for this is, when I'm turning, I purposely sit in the middle of my lane so no one can fit around me. Not the way it's supposed to work!

I saw this accident from across the street. I saw the moment of impact but not what led up to it. I did not see what led to the accident but from what I saw I agree with the conclusions of the police reported in this article:

"Police said the bicyclist was at fault. He was riding west across Skokie between cars, and the driver tried to avoid the bicyclist, but struck him and then a light pole."

By "between cars" I think they mean he was crossing the street at a gap in traffic.

I believe (which matches the police report as described above) what happened is that the bicyclist was crossing Skokie Blvd riding West. It was in the middle of a block, not at an intersection. It was dark. I saw no lights on the bicycle, and besides (if this is correct about what happened) he was crossing in the middle of a block. He must have thought he could beat out traffic but didn't make it. Skokie Blvd is a wide and fast street and he was struck on the far side of crossing the street. I had the impression at the time that the driver of the car tried to brake and avoid collision, but don't know exactly why I though that. Probably I was able to see the car slowing down. It all happened so fast.

As I say, the only thing I saw was the moment of impact, but from what I saw I completely believe the conclusions that the police reached.

It was well beyond the stop light at Main. The talk about running the light at Main or that the speed limit on Skokie Blvd should be reduced. That isn't what caused the accident. Earlier posts about accidents on Main Street. This was nowhere near Main street. It was on Skokie Blvd.

My condolences to the family of the bicyclist. From his address in the article he was only a few blocks from home, riding his bike towards home. It's so sad. It is a terrible thing to see someone struck down like this.

In my opinion, Skokie is not a safe place for cyclists or pedestrians. Whatever the speed limit, drivers are going to speed, drive high/drunk, run stop lights, and ignore stop signs. As we saw this past summer, pedestrians are not even necessarily safe on sidewalks. Walk or bike at your own peril.

A man has just died. He leaves family and friends who will miss him. It is sad when people are motiviated to write about events without having all the facts and which will potentially bring more hurt to those who are already suffering. If the intent is to prevent someone else from harm, then you should use this energy productively to make a difference.

They made main street 25 instead of 30. Have you tried riding that speed limit without any cars honking at you or flashing their lights. I live on Main and now I take Oakton to avoid the hassle. I wish Skokie would patrol main and hand out tickets or put a camera in to catch everyone going over that limit. What a mess Skokie blvd would be if they reduce the speed.

Ditto Sarah. Glad you brought it up. It's a "Nightmare on Main St." 90% of the time there aren't any pedestrians around. I go 25 MPH and I'm plagued by tailgaters who border on road rage and for a divided highway this is just a nutty speed limit. (Joining the Nutty limits in parts of MG & Evanston) Why Skokie did this based on a tragedy that had no causal connection to speed or abscence of a traffic control signal is unfathomable. The situation is exacerbated by banning trucks in Downtown Skokie forcing them off a 4 lane road down 2 lane roads of Gross Point (past a school) or Frontage to Either Howard or Main, (Past Schools) or adding to congestion on Dempster or Touhy .

We need to contact the Village and Complain en masse.
