Students at District 219 will be featured on Chicago ABC 7 on Wednesday, March 13 at 11:40 a.m.
District 219 fashion design construction and merchandising classes are teaming up with Westfield Old Orchard Mall for the 2013 Prom Promotion: Glass Slipper Project, by creating public art sculptures for display at the mall.
The classes visited Oak Street Design, a visual resource for hotel, retail and corporate clients. The design studio specializes in custom design, fabrication and installation. Students were divided into teams and challenged to create outdoor sculptures inspired by prom fashion, utilizing repurposed and recycled materials.
“We were thrilled to have the students down to our studio,” said Amanda Wolfson, production manager at Oak Street Design. “They did a really great job with the assignment.”
The sculptures will be displayed in the outdoor garden beds at Old Orchard from March 11 to May 8. The public can view the sculptures and vote for their favorite, as well as make donations to the Glass Slipper Project, a non-profit organization that collects gently used formal dresses and provides them free of charge to underprivileged students unable to purchase their own prom attire.
Donations for the Glass Slipper Project will be accepted on March 16 and 23 from noon to 3 p.m. at the Westfield Concierge in Old Orchard. Anyone who donates a dress or accessory will get a $10 Westfield gift card.
