Kaufman's Bakery Catches Fire

The bakery is said to be closed for several weeks as it recovers from the damage.

Fire crews from Skokie, Evanston and Wilmette responded to a fire at Kaufman’s Bakery, 4905 Dempster St., on Sunday around 2 a.m.

An employee was inside cooking when a kitchen component malfunctioned and caught on fire, the Chicago Tribune reports. No one was injured, but the fire did enough damage to keep the fire crews on scene for more than two hours.

The bakery is currently closed and will reopen in a several weeks. This marks the second time in 56 years that the bakery has had to temporarily close shop. In 1985, Kaufman’s Bakery shut down after a salmonella outbreak was traced back to the store.

Dear Skokie Patch, You probably know that Kaufman's is a beloved local institution. The fire is a tragedy and clearly the result on an accident.

Was there a need to bring up an unfortunate incident from over 25 years ago? Seems like your kicking them when they're down.

I agree 100%. There was no need to add that negative remark when they are down.

Yea, you guys are so right, because it's Skokie Patch's fault that Kaufmans closed due to a salmonella outbreak. The story is just documenting when the last time this place closed, I doubt there is any personal attack. Come on!

Odds are the village will drive Kaufman's out of town as they have other Moms & Pops. It looks like Skokie only wants big box businesses and could care less about the small entrepreneur.
