Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Highland Park), who suffered a stroke Saturday, remains in serious condition today at Northwestern Memorial Hospital despite making progress, according to Dr. Richard Fessler, the neurosurgeon who is treating him.
“Senator Kirk is progressing as expected and we continue to be hopeful about his long term prognosis,” Fessler said. “He remains in serious condition and is being monitored closely.”
As of Tuesday, Fessler reported Kirk began breathing on his own. He was also talking then, responding to questions and even asked for his cell phone, according to Fessler.
On Tuesday, Kirk’s family thanked people for their good wishes including President Barack Obama, Sen. Richard Durbin (D-Springfield), Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), Governor Patrick Quinn and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel.
"We are overwhelmed by the outpouring of support we've received over the last couple of days,” the family said in a prepared statement issued by Kirk’s office.
The family singled out Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) in particular. “Words cannot describe how much Joe Manchin's friendship and support means to us and especially to Mark,” the statement said. “We are truly blessed to have such amazing family and friends."
Kirk and Manchin, who entered the Senate about the same time, have been regular lunch partners. They had planned to sit together at the State of the Union address Tuesday.
Kirk checked himself into Lake Forest Hospital Saturday, where doctors discovered a carotid artery dissection in the right side of his neck, according to a release issued Monday by Kirk’s office. He was transferred to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where further tests revealed that he had suffered an ischemic stroke.

According to the reports from his doctors from the beginning - - - He was fortunate that his stroke was on the RIGHT side of his brain because it Does NOT affect his Left brain activities like speech and cognitive reasoning. The right side of the brain will give him Left side mobility issues.

I wrote here that I think Senator Kirk should resign due to his stroke and brain damage. I get censored and removed. Nice censorship......Chavez and Ahmadinijad must be handling this Anti American silencing of posts for The Patch. You should be ashamed of yourselves censoring genuine thoughts that people post. Disgusting!

Why should he resign?

Cockroach - do you know something we don't about any brain damage the Senator suffered? If the stroke did not impact his cognative abilities, then I see no reason for him to resign. Perhaps you just don't care for the Senator, but that is not really a reason for him to resign. Gaby Giffords, who had verifiable brain damage almost immediately after her horrific shooting, took one full year to resign. I don't see anyone making an issue of that, and she should have been given ample time to heal before making such a decision. Let's wait and see how Senator Kirk recovers from this awful illness before any decisions about his future are made. If the stroke affected the left side of the brain, then he should be just fine, cognitavely speaking, and able to carry on his duties. Let's not forget how long Sen. Strom Thurman and Sen. Robert Byrd continued to serve, despite obvious cognitive deficiencies? Were you calling for them to resign?

I'm with you, HM. Calling for the guy's resignation a week after he had a stroke is just plain mean-spirited.

Cockroach, Did you think Gabby Giffords should have resigned right after her injury?
If not, you are inconsistent!
