Morton Grove Man Climbs South Pole Summit

He led a team of 14 through Antarctica on skis to reach the South Pole; then half the team continued the journey on up the mountain.

Morton Grove resident Keith Heger led a team of 14 people on a skiing trek through Antarctica to the South Pole, and then continued on with half of them to a high camp on Mount Vinson, climbing up and reaching the summit, according to TribLocal.

Heger was traveling with the adventure company Polar Explorers, in Wilmette. They flew a charter plane to a base camp in Antarctica and started the skiing and climbing adventure from there.  It was Heger's second time reaching the summit of Mount Vinson, according to the paper.

Mount Vinson is 16,067 feet high, and about eight miles wide, according to 7summits.com.
