One Injured in Atlanta School Shooting: How to Stop the Violence?

Do you believe Obama's gun control proposals will help prevent school shootings?

Another school shooting took place in Atlanta Thursday, the Huffington Post reports. A student opened fire at Price Middle School, shooting a 14-year-old in the neck before being stopped by an armed officer at the school.

The wounded boy was taken to a nearby hospital and later discharged, the website reports. The school does have metal detectors, and it’s unclear how the weapon got inside, Fox Atlanta reports.

This incident is the latest school shooting in recent months. Most notably, 26 people, mostly elementary school children, were gunned down at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. in December.

The Newtown shooting sparked a nationwide debate over gun control. President Obama made several proposals regarding the topic in mid-January.

Among the president's proposals were background checks for all gun sales, even those by private sellers, reinstating and strengthening the assault weapons ban that expired in 2004 and limiting ammunition magazines to 10 rounds, the New York Times reported.

Read Obama's proposal in entirety.

The National Rifle Association feels schools will be safer with armed guards inside, NBC News reports. The NRA is now pushing for that to happen at schools nationwide.

The first congressional hearings on gun violence begin Wednesday.

What do you think needs to be done to stop school shootings? Do you agree with President Obama’s plan for gun control? Are you a fan of the NRA’s idea to have armed guards in schools? Tell us in the comments section.

School shooting are of course terrible. I suggest the shooting in south chicago are equally bad and getting worse. Actually a remarkable cultural difference being exposed; but not written about, is the fact all these shootings in chicago area are in the black neighborhoods. There are many gun owners in the north suburbs... But the whites are not Killing 5-10 people per day and wounding many more as occures daily in the south... So... Hard to say guns are the issue... Seems who is in possession of the gun is the issue...of course that is politically incorrect to address so will go unanswered...there is a reason prison populations are overwhelmingly black...

Racial division will not help to stem the tide of violence, it will make it worse. Understand that I am a Pro-Gun and Pro-Conceal Carry Advocate. I believe a strong defense is essential to stop crime and an armed citizen is not an easy target for criminals. A 70 year old Girls Basketball Coach proved that just yesterday. He is a CCW License holder and he shot two armed Robbers that tried to Rob him and two female students. Conceal Carry works, get on board and you may just save your families lives.

Mr. Garrett, looking back over the past 5 years I have seen so many white faces involved in the banking/financial mess. Not only violating the laws but using influence to change law (Glass-Steagall) that would have been violated had it remained in force. Yet, these folks have escaped not only any prosecution but have been lavishly rewarded with millions of dollars.

You surely know how justice is obtained best with the aid of expensive legal help. Those in the inner city cannot afford such help and must make use of overworked and low-paid public defenders. When inner city residents accused of crimes appear in criminal court they are strongly encouraged to plea-bargain, exchanging a short sentence and saving the state money by avoiding a jury trail at the cost to themselves of admitting guilt, even if they innocent. You say "there is a reason prison populations are overwhelmingly black". Indeed there is! I strongly suggest you read the book "Courtroom 302", that documents in great detail exactly how the Cook County Court system works for those whose guilt you assume.

Clif, well said. It should be noted that in nearly all of these mass shootings, the shooters were white. A few months ago, THE ATLANTIC published an interesting article about Concealed Carry laws. For a brief moment I even considered buying a gun and getting a CC license. (I've never handled a firearm in my life!) But I reread that article and noted a glaring fact ( and it was documented): Concealed Carry works in communities that are small, crime free to begin with (or with a very low crime rate), and nearly all white. I do digress. Race plays a terrible role in criminal justice - or injustice.

I believe there are two factors, that lack of God in our lives and the lack of the family structure. Most of these shootings are by people in gangs and part of the gangs thing is to create a bizarre family structure for these kids to belong. Let's put the ten commandments back in the schools. Let them see daily, "Thou shalt not kill". It certainly wouldn't hurt.

That's why Obama is giving his gun control spiel in Minneapolis instead of his hometown of Chicago where we are 43 murders into the new year. Clueless wonders we have for leaders.

If ALL civilians were licensed to carry guns, it would make for a VERY polite society... These "shooting spree" mental cases would be taken down in a rain of bullets by civillians BEFORE doing more damage.

There also needs to be ARMED security placed in ALL schools... Enough with this violence! Any nucklehead walking on school property with any type of weapon should be handled the old fashioned way; "Shoot first and ask questions later!"

I support Concealed Carry. If the people with CC permits in the other 49 states were causing any problems, the CC laws in those states would be rescinded. Why the good record? Only serious, responsible people will be willing to go through the stringent licensing process. Criminals will continue to carry guns, illegally, just as they have always done.
