A handful of Cook County companies will be closing or have announced mass layoffs, according to notices filled with the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Development. 

Those companies include: 

• NanoInk, Inc., 8025 Lamon Avenue in Skokie, will be closing and has announced the layoff of 73 employees.
• Ball Metal Beverage Packaging will be closing its Elgin facility at 1717 Gifford Road in Elgin. The company expects to layoff 61 employees by April 27, according to the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Development. 
• Flying Food Fare Midway, LLC, 5370 South Cicero Avenue in Chicago, plans to layoff 87 employees by April 28. 
• General Cable, 1780 Birchwood Avenue in Des Plaines, will layoff 65 employees by April 19. 
• John Costigan Residential Center, 1360 East Irving Park Road in Streamwood, will be closing and is expected to lay off 107 employees by April 30. 
• L3 Electrodynamics, Inc., 1200 Hicks Road in Rolling Meadows, will be laying off 80 employees this year. The first layoff is expected on March 1 and the last layoff will be on Oct. 25. 

FreightCar America, Inc. in Danville is expected to layoff the most employees—254—in the state in coming months. The layoffs are expected to begin on April 18 and continue through May 2. 

Other suburban companies that will be affected by layoffs or closings include: 

• Vie de France Yamazaki, Inc., 1049 Industrial Drive in Bensenville, will be closing and laying off 71 employees by April 27. 
• Portola Packaging, Inc., 951 Douglas Road in Batavia, will be closing and will lay off 71 employees by April 12. 

The Illinois Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act requires employers to provide 60 days advance notice of pending plant closures or mass layoffs, according to the Department of Commerce and Economic Development website.
