What's a "peace" officer?

In most cases, a peace officer is a police officer. However, it could also be someone who works for the police department, but is not a police officer; ie a front desk attendant. We use the wording peace officer because that is how the charge is read in the police report and courtroom. Hope that further explains things.
Best,
George
