Skokie Has Second Violent Robbery In 8 Days

Skokie’s second violent robbery in eight days shares some striking similarities to its predecessor.

A Skokie woman was hospitalized after stopping by a 7-Eleven store at Main Street and Skokie Boulevard on April 28 around 2 a.m. The victim was heading toward her apartment about two major intersections over, at Church Street and Skokie Boulevard. Halfway home, however, her hair was pulled from behind; a large man held a knife to her throat, the police report stated.

“Give me your wallet. Give me everything,” he said. “Don’t be f****** stupid.”

The woman handed over a Coach wrist wallet that contained several credit cards and $500 in cash. The 38-year-old woman then became “defensive,” and pushed the man away from her, the report said. The suspect was described as a black male, 6-foot-2 and about 220 pounds, police said. He also was wielding what the woman described as “an ice pick with a yellow handle.”

The man retaliated by slashing toward her, cutting both her hands before fleeing southbound through an alley. The woman also ran away, and called her boyfriend in Evanston to take her to the hospital, the police report said.

Similarities to the last crime

Just eights days prior on April 20 around 11:30 p.m., a 54-year-old Skokie resident just one intersection south from the second robbery that occurred at Main Street and Skokie Boulevard.

The 54-year-old man was approached by one man and sucker punched by another, the report said. The attacker hit the 54-year-old’s jaw, knocked him out and took the wallet, which contained $250 in cash, the report stated. The attacker was described as a black male, 6-foot-2 and about 220-pounds.

The description of the man involved in both incidents was similar. In both incidents people were injured. The 54-year-old man suffered a broken jaw and the woman had bleeding hands, according to police reports. 

The incidents occurred along the same major intersection on Skokie Boulevard, with one happening on Main Street and the other on Oakton. The incidents also happened late at night and on the weekend.

In the second incident, the woman told police she walked to 7-Eleven from her apartment near Church Street and Skokie Boulevard to get a sugary snack at about 2 a.m. Despite having the same store a few blocks away from her home, the woman walked more than one mile to Main Street and Skokie Boulevard, according to the police report.

She told police she purchased Reese’s candy and was given $10 in change. On her way back the woman walked through an alley behind a building at 4831 Wright Terrace, the report stated.

That’s when her hair was pulled from behind and a knife placed to her throat. The woman had $500 in cash that her robber ultimately made off with. She told police she called her boyfriend to take her to the hospital and not the police because she "doesn’t trust cops," the report stated.

Hospital employees notified police because the woman told them that she had been mugged, the report said.
