UPDATE: Mother, Daughter Killed in Double Homicide

Father tells police he killed his 18-year-old daughter and his 27-month-old granddaughter.

Update 10:06 p.m. -

The father of the murdered 18-year-old mother called 911 operators shortly after attacking them and told police he had just stabbed his 18-year-old daughter and 2-year-old granddaughter, police said.

Police did not say what the man's motive was.

Update 8:08 p.m. -

A 39-year-old Skokie, Ill., resident is being questioned by police and is currently a person of interest, investigators said. Police officials said the man's relationship with the victims will not be released until all family members have been notified.

Earlier -

A woman and her 27-month-old daughter were stabbed to death in their Main Street apartment Wednesday, police said.

The incident happened in the 4600 block of Main Street, near Kilpatrick Avenue. Both were transported to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston but were pronounced dead shortly after, police said.

Police currently have a suspect in custody, and they noted that there is no threat to the public at this time.

An upstairs neighbor, Jessica Record, said the victims lived in the first floor apartment of the brick three-flat. Record said the victims had lived in the building for about two years.

“I never heard anything," Record said. "I feel so bad that I was upstairs and couldn’t stop it."

Record said her sister saw police take a man into custody who was known to the victims.

Dolores Mondragon, who lives in the buliding's garden apartment, said she was home at the time of the killings. She said she heard noise that sounded like people fighting. She also heard the girl screaming and crying and suddenly the crying stopped.

Shibu David, who owns an apartment building nearby, said he's seen an increase in police activity in the neighborhood in the past three to four years, including squad cars in the area in the wee hours of the morning.

The North Regional Major Crimes Task Force, a specialized forensics unit, arrived at the crime scene at 3:30 p.m.

No further information is available at this time. Once new information comes in, Skokie Patch will update.

It was originally reported that the woman was in her 30s and the daughter was 3. This was incorrect and the story has been updated.

Why? What can someone do to someone to make them want to kill a mother and an innocent child that did no harm?i hate knowing people can have no heart. What could he possibly need that bad to kill. Always thought skokie was a safe place but if your not safe in your own home... Where are you safe?

It was a domestic situation. Unfortunately, some people are the least safe in their own homes. Very sad.

Why didn't the person hearing this call the police? I call the police on people all the time in my apartment complex! A few times people (men) have arrested for child abuse &domestic violence. It's not about "being a snitch!" It's about saving a LIFE! The shortest verse in the Bible is, "And Jesus wept." That says it all.

What kind of monster would do such a thing to his own daughter and granddaughter.
It's just sickening.

This didn't happen in a "moment" of insanity. The situation must have been bad and deteriorating over a period of time. This is why family & friends need to act swiftly and appropriately to help someone in an unhealthy & unsafe environment....remove them from dangerous people and possibilities. Don't just WORRY when it is obvious that serious trouble is brewing......ACT!!!

This is your result, and it is just an absolute tragedy. I do not live far from this crime scene either. Prayers to the family.

it a shame that people that hear a crime happing can stand bye and do nothing to
help .i work security and fell that lawenforcment is fighting a losing battle when they have people that wont get involed in these matters .now there are to victums that could have been save with just a simple call to 911 to report a domestic issue. i feel that people that have common knowlage about crimes like this should be charged with accseory to this crime

I hope her father did not consider her to be a burden to him, and then again there must be argument going on with them both. Our actions sometimes play a great role in the outcome of some things. Fathers are most likely close with their daughters and I am deeply sorry it could not work out, and have to end the way it did. I believe somewhere in this fathers mind he could have regret the outcome, but now it is too late. Sometimes even us parents have to stay still and let children vent until it is more convenient and things are more settled to have a conversation. It may not be what the parents want, but sometimes they just have to do that. I am deeply sorry it got this far where death was the only way to solve it.
