A woman and her 27-month-old daughter were stabbed to death in their Main Street apartment Wednesday, police said.

The incident happened in the 4600 block of Main Street, near Kilpatrick Avenue. Both were transported to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston but were pronounced dead shortly after, police said.

Police currently have a suspect in custody, and they noted that there is no threat to the public at this time.

An upstairs neighbor, Jessica Record, said the victims lived in the first floor apartment of the brick three-flat. Record said the victims had lived in the building for about two years.

“I never heard anything," Record said. "I feel so bad that I was upstairs and couldn’t stop it."

Record said her sister saw police take a man into custody who was known to the victims.

Dolores Mondragon, who lives in the buliding's garden apartment, said she was home at the time of the killings. She said she heard noise that sounded like people fighting. She also heard the girl screaming and crying and suddenly the crying stopped.

Shibu David, who owns an apartment building nearby, said he's seen an increase in police activity in the neighborhood in the past three to four years, including squad cars in the area in the wee hours of the morning.

The North Regional Major Crimes Task Force, a specialized forensics unit, arrived at the crime scene at 3:30 p.m.

No further information is available at this time. Once new information comes in, Skokie Patch will update.

It was originally reported that the woman was in her 30s and the daughter was 3. This was incorrect and the story has been updated.
