More than 300 votes were cast last week and Glenbrook South's Molly McDonagh claimed the title of Athlete of the Week.
The nominees for Patch Athlete of the Week, Jan. 16 - Jan. 22:
Zach Cole, senior, boys bowling, Deerfield – Cole took third place at the sectional championships with a 1332 in his six-game series. The senior led Deerfield to a third-place team finish and qualified as an individual for the state championship. Cole averaged a score of 228.36 in the Northern Illinois Boys Bowling Conference this year. (Watch a video of Cole, perfect game, here.)
Maggie Lyon, senior, girls basketball, New Trier – Lyon scored 29 points in New Trier’s 56-43 victory over Niles West last week. Lyon, a Northwestern University recruit, helped the Trevians avenge a 45-23 loss to the Wolves earlier this season. New Trier is 14-6 this year.
Billy Voitik, junior, boys basketball, Niles North – Voitik’s put-back basket at the buzzer gave Niles North a two-point victory over Glenbrook North and a big win in the Central Suburban League North. Voitik was also the starting quarterback for the Vikings’ football team in the Fall.
Jake Zuckerman, senior, boys swimming, Highland Park – Zuckerman fought through illness to win the 50-yard freestyle at Buffalo Grove’s Fred Pallfy Invitational last week. Zuckerman finished in at 22.80 seconds and was a big factor in helping Highland Park finish fourth as a team.
