Anchored by a Walmart Supercenter, Touhy Marketplace is set on 15 acres of land. Village officials and developers were present at the site on Wednesday to celebrate its construction.
The construction site for Touhy Marketplace is massive. It’s 15 acres. That’s 653,400 square feet, or approximately 11 football fields, end zone to end zone. Eleven. Anchoring the site will be a Walmart Supercenter, 150,000 square feet dedicated to selling produce, clothing, electronics, bed sheets, tools – you name it, they’ll probably have it. All in all, there will be 195,000 square feet of retail space and plenty of parking. Construction is set to be complete within “12 months,” or spring of 2014. On Wednesday, large yellow construction trucks were laying the groundwork for Touhy Marketplace. For years, people who love McDonald's egg McMuffins and sausage biscuits have wondered "why oh why can't we get these any time of the day?" Sit tight. McDonald's is still considering it, according to a story in Bloomberg Businessweek. In an interview with CNBC, McDonald's President and CEO Don Thompson said the restaurant has heard the cries from fans to serve breakfast 24 hours a day and in fact offers "Breakfast After Midnight" at select locations—just none around here. Thomas told CNBC that McDonald's has looked at some "innovative ways" to expand breakfast hours for customers. "I think we'll be seeing some of those things in the near future." If you haven't shopped at your local Jewel-Osco grocery store in a while, be prepared for a new customer service initiative that you may, or may not, appreciate. It's called the "cart-to-car" service, according to couponsinthenews.com, and whether you want the help or not, your bagger is expected to follow you and your cart out to your vehicle. The service is mandatory, though Jewel-Osco denies it has anyting to do with keeping track of shopping carts, according to Coupons in the News. "We understand that this is a very different service and it might take our customers some time to understand that we want this to be the norm," said a Jewel customer service representative in the article. When George and Andy Lagis were growing up, they joked they would someday market their grandfather’s homemade Greek yogurt. That dream was well on its way to becoming a reality on Monday when the Lagis brothers, from Skokie, opened a self-serve yogurt shop in Park Ridge. Andy said their decision to open Yourgurt was influenced by nostalgia for their grandfather’s yogurt and the increasing popularity of yogurt of all kinds during the last six years. Kensington Florals and Events will host a grand opening at 3701 W. Dempster St., Skokie, on April 30.
When Victoria Thanoukos, 31, decided to open a flower shop after getting a law degree from The John Marshal Law School, the Glenview native says her parents were supportive, Skokie Review reported. In fact, Thanoukos is opening up shop next to her father’s Greek restaurant, Hub’s Restaurant, at 3701 W. Dempster St., and will be hosting a grand opening on April 30 from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Skokie Review reported.

Burger King announced this week that it’s expanding its delivery service to 20 Chicago-area restaurants and over the next three months will be adding locations to the BK Delivers website in Skokie, Evanston Lincoln Park, Logan Square, The Loop, Cicero, Downers Grove, NBC Chicago reported. Customers will be able to order online or over the phone and need to purchase a minimum food order of $10, according to a press release. Gabby Douglas will be at Barnes & Noble in Old Orchard Mall from 6:30 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. on May 2. Douglas will be promoting and signing her new book, “Raising the Bar,” which gives an inside view into her life as an average teenage girl as well as her experiences in the spotlight, according to a press release issued on Thursday. Line tickets will be distributed to customers presenting a copy of Douglas’ new book with proof of purchase from Barnes & Noble starting at 9 a.m. on May 2. Douglas won the gold in gymanstics during the 2012 Summer Olympics. She was the first American to win gold in both the individual all-around and team competitions. The family-run Four Cohn Shoes is preparing to close at the end of July at the latest, due to health reasons.
Skokie’s iconic Four Cohn Shoes is preparing to close at the end of July due to unexpected health reasons and while owner Howard Cohen’s illness is not life threatening, he says his energy is not the same and he sometimes has vision problems, Skokie Review reported. The family-run business has been open since 1910 first at Division Street and Western Avenue in Chicago and for about 25 years on the 5012 Dempster Street in Skokie, while Cohen would have loved keeping the store open for as long as possible, “nothing goes on forever,” he told Skokie Review.
