Energy Options for the 21st Century - David Hacker, Ph.D., Chemical Engineer

The twin goals our national energy problem involve both a
reduction in our carbon footprint and reducing our dependence on foreign oil.  Policy decisions have been made that would accomplish this through the development of renewable energy sources such as bio-fuel, solar power and wind power. Unfortunately, these sources are unlikely to satisfy our energy needs for the foreseeable future. The more realistic options at this time are the expansion of nuclear power and the utilization of natural gas. Why these are the more likely directions we ought to consider will be examined. The consequences of pursuing these so-called environmentally-friendly sources will be discussed in light of current technology, as well as how to bring each of these options to practical use.
