Free U.S. citizenship assistance in Skokie
On March 31, 2012, the Alliance of Filipinos for Immigrant Rights and Empowerment (AFIRE) will host its tenth free citizenship processing workshop for eligible legal permanent residents (LPRs) or green card holders. The workshop will be held at Oakton Community Center, Park District, 4701 Oakton Street, Skokie, IL 60076 from 9:00 am to 10:30 am. Interested applicants are requested to call AFIRE (773-580-1025) for reservation. State Representatives Daniel Biss and Lou Lang will address the applicants about the importance of citizenship. Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky will send her representative to the workshop.
AFIRE is a member of a New Americans Initiative (NAI) citizenship collaborative which was created by the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (ICIRR) and the Illinois Department of Human Services to mobilize immigrants to naturalize.
Through NAI’s free citizenship workshops, community volunteers, immigrant advocates, and pro bono attorneys help immigrants fill out naturalization forms and prepare for citizenship tests. The legal service and application processing including photographs during the workshop is free. The applicant, however, has to bring a money order for $680 made payable to Department of Homeland Security to cover the naturalization application fee.
