At the North Shore Senior Center, Nielsen Campus: Masterpieces of Silent Cinema : City Lights with Reid Schultz, Filmmaker and Columbia College Faculty
Four years into" talkie" cinema, Charlie Chaplin took a gamble and wrote, performed, directed and scored silent cinema's final masterpiece. He made what is arguably his finest achievement yet. "City Lights" epitomizes Chaplin's classic blend of pathos and slapstick, grounding his physical comedy in real human feelings. The story, involving the Tramp's attempts to get money for an operation that will restore sight to a blind flower girl provides the star with an ideal framework for humor and humanity. The film culminates with one of the most moving scenes in the history of cinema. This was the perfect ending to the glory days of silent cinema.
