terpieces of Silent Cinema : City Lights with Reid Schultz\, Filmmaker a
nd Columbia College Faculty\nFour years into" talkie" cinema\, Charlie C
haplin took a gamble and wrote\, performed\, directed and scored silent
cinema's final masterpiece. He made what is arguably his finest achievem
ent yet. "City Lights" epitomizes Chaplin's classic blend of pathos and
slapstick\, grounding his physical comedy in real human feelings. The st
ory\, involving the Tramp's attempts to get money for an operation that
will restore sight to a blind flower girl provides the star with an idea
l framework for humor and humanity. The film culminates with one of the
most moving scenes in the history of cinema. This was the perfect ending
to the glory days of silent cinema.\nWednesday\,&nbsp\;12/12\, 12:30pm
