Should Glenview Require Landlords to Rent Section 8 Housing?

Skokie's neighbor to the northwest says its board of trustees will reconsider the issue of section 8 vouchers in the next several months.

Glenview officials are still deciding whether the village should require landlords to rent to people holding a section 8 voucher, following new changes to county law.

Section 8 vouchers, also known as housing choice vouchers, are subsidies provided by the federal government on behalf of low-income families, the elderly and people with disabilities. Historically, Cook County landlords could consider section 8 vouchers when deciding whether or not to rent to a particular tenant. However, the county amended its law in August 2013 to make it illegal to do so--but home rule municipalities, like Glenview, can write their own ordinances on the matter.

"Today, it is an option in Glenview," village president James Patterson said at the chamber of commerce's annual state of the village address.

Glenview's board of trustees voted in August to reverse the county's ordinance, but Patterson said they will revisit the vote in six months.

There were about 140 section 8 voucher holders in Glenview this May, as compared to 404 in Skokie, according to the Chicago Tribune

What do you think? Should Glenview landlords be required to accept section 8 voucher holders?
