Floral Avenue Groundbreaking Heralds New Breed of Housing in Downtown Skokie

Streetscape Development and Skokie Mayor George Van Dusen will host a groundbreaking ceremony on Friday, June 27 for Floral Avenue, a new breed of American housing that is part of the continuing revitalization of the village’s downtown.

Floral Avenue will include 20 new single family homes, starting at $465,000. All homes will feature StreetScape’s nationally acclaimed vision for new urbanism and will be engineered for energy efficiency and comfort.

The groundbreaking ceremony will be held at the corner of Floral Avenue and Cleveland Street in Skokie, beginning at 9:00 a.m. Speakers will include Mayor Van Dusen and John McLinden, president and CEO of StreetScape Development.

Floral Avenue showcases StreetScape’s innovative approach to homebuilding that begins with a single question to home buyers: ‘How Do You Live?’ From that point, a home is tailored to meet the customer’s requirements.

All homes are designed to meet the stringent requirements of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Zero Ready program.  The homes feature front porches to promote neighborly living. Streetscape recently developed the SchoolStreet project in downtown Libertyville, and has earned praise from national media and housing industry experts including Sarah Susanka, architect and author of the “Not So Big House” series, Sam Rashkin, who pioneered the EnergyStar program of the U.S. Department of Energy and Leigh Gallagher, assistant managing editor of Fortune Magazine and author of “The End of the Suburbs: Where the American Dream is Moving.”

The event will feature a gold shovel ceremony. Afterwards, coffee and refreshments will be served in the new sales center, located at 8149 N. Lincoln Ave.

“This event is a huge milestone, and we’re thrilled to be making this project a reality,” said McLinden. “Floral Avenue is more than just a new development; it’s a new breed of housing, and that’s why we’ve been able to capture the attention of homebuyers and the media across the nation.”

Skokie made the prestigious 2014 Livability.com list of 100 Best Places to Live in America.
