Avoid a $50 Ticket; What You Need To Know About Snow in Skokie

Including the snowfall totals, and where to park to avoid a ticket and fine. There will be recycling pickup, but no garbage pickup.

Skokie received 12 inches of snow from Dec. 31 through Jan. 2, and it's still falling.

Here's what you need to know.

Plowing. The village's Public Works crews have been out plowing the last three days around the clock, said Ann Tennes, the communications and marketing director. Sidewalk plowing started Jan. 1, and crews plan to plow sidewalks at least once more. Alley plowing started Jan. 2, and crews plan to complete by the end of the day. They will likely re-plow alleys Friday morning. Crews also hand-cleared areas around bus shelters.

Garbage and Recycling Collection. There will be no garbage collection until Monday, Jan. 6, because all the village's trucks are in operation as snowplows. Put out your recycling as usual. A third-party contractor picks up recycling, so it will maintain the normal schedule.

Closings. Turning Point Behavioral Health Center, Zarem/Golde ORT and the Holocaust Museum are closed Thursday due to weather. The Skokie Library is open.

Parking. The Alternate-Side Parking Program will remain in effect from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on January 2, 3 and 4.  On even-numbered days (such as Jan. 2 and 4), vehicles will be required to park on the side of the street with even-numbered addresses.  Likewise, park on the odd-numbered side of the street on odd-numbered days.

To verify that alternate-side parking is in effect call 847/675-SNOW (7669) for an automated update, listen to 1660 AM Skokie Radio or view SkokieVision cable.  An emergency siren sounds throughout the community at 7 a.m. if alternate-side parking is in effect that day, and sounds again at 6 p.m. to signal that the program has ended for the day and that vehicles may be moved to the opposite side of the street.
