Healthy Kids Day Open House at the Y
Where/When: North Suburban YMCA, 2705 Techny Rd., Northbrook; 1-4 p.m., Saturday, April 16
Why Go: Get active, entertain the kids and enjoy a sampling of the Y’s activities—all for free. Activities include yoga, youth boot camp, nutrition counseling, a family mini-triathlon, art projects, scavenger hunts, an aquatic obstacle course and a DJ dance party. Whew!

Northbrook's 41st Earth & Arbor Day Celebration
Where/When: Village Green at Shermer and Meadow roads, Northbrook; 8:30 a.m.–2 p.m., Saturday, April 16
Why Go: Learn how to save money and help the environment at this event, which includes more than 60 exhibitors sharing earth-friendly ideas. Bonus: the event also includes food samples, children's activities, performances from Glenbrook North musical groups and a reclaimed wood sawmill demonstration. Don't forget to pick up your free tree seedling and bring special recyclables for collection at the east-side commuter lot by St. Norbert.

Why Go: Miss Sister teaches catechism class a little differently—it includes her own version of “The Newlywed Game” and she’ll fine you $1 if you’re late. This send-up of Catholic culture has been running in one version or another since 1993, and is still making audiences laugh today.

Talking Pictures Festival
Where/When: Various venues, Evanston; April 14-17
Why Go: Catch independent films from around the world as well as offerings from local filmmakers in this four-day festival. There’s something for everyone, including animation, documentaries, fiction films and shorts programs. The festival opens with a Chilean film about family called and concludes with a pair of documentaries about water.
Pricing: $8 seniors, $10 regular admission
