Mosquitoes In Skokie Test Positive For West Nile Virus

The Northshore Mosquito Abatement District will be spraying for mosquitoes on Thursday, June 20, in Morton Grove, Skokie and Lincolnwood.

It's time to get out the insect repellent and spray it on your family--at least every night at dusk, if they're outdoors.

Preventive testing of mosquitoes has found some in Skokie which tested positive for West Nile Virus, according to the Northshore Mosquito Abatement District (NSMAD).

"So far the only positive pool of mosquitoes from within the service area of the NSMAD is from Skokie," said David Zazra, communications manager of NSMAD. "Those mosquitoes were found in one of our traps, collected on June 17, and tested in our lab on June 18."

There haven't been any cases of West Nile in humans yet, and the Skokie Health Department is urging residents to take the following steps to avoid that:

  • staying indoors at dawn, dusk or early evening;
  • wearing long-sleeved shirts and long pants whenever you are outdoors;
  • spraying clothes with repellants and wearing protective clothing if spending time in a heavily wooded area;
  • applying insect repellents containing DEET very sparingly on exposed skin.
The Northshore Mosquito Abatement will be spraying for mosquitoes in  Skokie, Morton Grove and Lincolnwood Thursday, June 20.
