Score Some Girl Scout Cookies Locally

Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago will be selling their delicious cookies this Saturday, Jan. 5. 

The newly minted boxes remind customers that buying Girl Scout cookies is more than just an exchange of money for product.  The young Girl Scout entrepreneurs learn key business skills that carry them into adulthood.

Skokie resident and troop leader Amanda Lorenz said training her scouts to sell the cookies is part of the fun.

“We practice how they are going to talk to people, help them set a goal for themselves and figure out together how to count up the money and what to do with it,” Lorenz said. “Part of Girl Scout law is being courteous to other people and be responsible to what you say.”

Lorenz’s group consists of 11 girls, one of which is her daughter, and the troops are about 7-years-of-age, she said. Last year, the scouts were taught on how to sell the cookies. This year, Lorenz’s troop is taking it to the next level and that means counting the money and deciding what to do with it, she said. 

“I love that our girls come from different backgrounds and different cultures,” Lorenz said about her Skokie troop. “We are a multi-school, multi-race, multi-religious group. We have everyone in our group and I love that.”

Lorenz added that the best way to find where to buy Girl Scout cookies is through the Girl Scout Website.

Customers have eight varieties of cookies from which to choose in 2013: The Savannah Smile, Thank U Berry Munch, Samoas, Thin Mints, Trefoils, Tagalongs, Do-si-does, and Dulce de Leche.

Girls set cookie goals to support their chosen activities for the year, fund community service and leadership projects, attend summer camp, travel to destinations near and far and provide events for girls in their community. 

Many local Girl Scouts also participate in the Gift of Caring program, a service project in which troops decide which organization in their community they would like to help and then ask customers to purchase and donate boxes of cookies that the troop will deliver to the organization.

“I hope the community supports the Girl Scouts and buys some cookies,” Lorenz said. “We do more than just sell cookies; we talk about woman’s professional sport’s teams, we learn about money, we go to the theatre – we’re more than just cookies.

“We’re open for more girls if they want to join great,” she added.
