Local Families Join Worldwide Effort to Create Snowflakes for Sandy Hook

Parents, teachers, children and friends of Spencer Loomis School in Hawthorn Woods help decorate the halls for Newtown children's return to school.

People from across the country are busy creating snowflakes this week to send to Newtown. The Spencer Loomis community joined the effort on Wednesday at a snowflake creating event at Concord Banquets in Kildeer.

"People from around the world are making snowflakes, even in Norway," said Angie Schroedel who organized the event along with Lora Rampino.

“Our hope is to ease the anxiety, even a small fraction, that the student, the staff, and the parents will be feeling. Especially the parents as they release their children to the care of the school again. All of us, as parents, cannot imagine the horror all those parents are feeling,” she said.

Snowflakes for Sandy Hook was started by the Connecticut PTSA. The PTSA along with the National PTA explained, in a letter, after the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting, the children will be returning to school in a new building.

“Parent-volunteers are working to ensure that the students are welcomed back by a winter wonderland with the entire school decorated with as many unique snowflakes as possible. We encourage senders to be as creative as possible, remembering that no two snowflakes are alike.”

At Concord Banquets, snowflake creators were making a variety of snowflakes from large, curled snowflakes, to smaller glittery ones. Some were white; some blue; and others multi-color. They used copy paper and large coffee filters. Rampino was hoping to send 1,000 snowflakes to Newtown. With a large turnout on Wednesday and the group was certain to surpass its goal.

Newtown officials ask for no more gifts, already have "warehouses full". http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/U/US_CONNECTICUT_SCHOOL_SHOOTING_DONATIONS?SITE=AP&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT&CTIME=2012-12-26-17-47-41 While I understand people's need to "do something" to make themselves feel better, how about just collecting some money and sending it to the memorial fund in Newtown?

@Vortex The snowflakes are actually a request from the national PTA along with the Connecticut PTA as opposed to a random gift.
