Sweety Pies Bakery Is Here to Stay

Sweety Pies Bakery signed a lease to secure another five years in Skokie. In the video, co-owner Dana Kruger shows Patch her latest cake creations.

The sweet aroma of freshly baked pies, pastries and cakes that sweeps over Lincoln Avenue is here to stay.

As Sweety Pies co-owner Dana Kruger busily prepared cakes for the weekend rush, she told Patch that Sweety Pies has signed another five-year lease. With one year left on its current lease, Sweety Pies will remain in Skokie for at least another six years.

They opened at 7931 Lincoln Ave., where Libertad Restaurant is now located, in 2007, and moved down the block to their current location at 8042 Lincoln Ave. in 2009.

Considering the poor state of the economy when Sweety Pies opened in 2007, Kruger said she couldn’t be happier with the way Sweety Pies has taken off.

“I love being able to take something someone has in their head and make it come true,” she said.

In the video, Kruger displays a cake she made to celebrate three men’s 50th birthdays. She designed the cake as an intricately detailed suitcase, showing where each of the men has traveled. Kruger said the cake took her two days to finish, but a typical cake takes six to eight hours.

Sometimes customers come in with old family recipes that their grandmothers used to make. Kruger said that she likes that, as a small business, they can take those recipes and make custom desserts.

“It’s a luxury to do customized things,” Kruger said. “We can create things people have in their imaginations.”

She said the best selling cake is typically chocolate cake or something with fresh strawberries. And since the chocolate is not overly rich, Kruger said even non-chocolate lovers love the chocolate cake.

Sweety Pies offers more than just sweets. They sell locally- roasted Intelligentsia Coffee and homemade breakfast and lunch. Sweety Pies is primarily a bakery, but with the dining options, free Wi-Fi and café space, it functions as a coffee shop cafe as well.
