LATINOS IN SKOKIE Fiesta Anniversary

Latinos in Skokie

Latinos in Skokie (LIS) celebrated this past Sunday December 4th its first anniversary with a Grand Fiesta, which was attended by many distinguished local and state officials, personalities, and numerous members of the Latino community. The event took place in the Restaurante El Tipico of Skokie, which provided a great buffet of typical food and drinks, special deserts and festive music from the Mariachi Real de San Luis. The Fiesta was extended until late night with karaoke Latin music and dance.


Some of the many distinguished personalities confirmed in attendance were Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, Mr. Joshua Hoyt (Director of the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights), Mr. Larry Suffredin (Cook County Commissioner), Judge Lionel Jean-Baptiste (Cook County Judge), Mr. Lou Lang (State Representative), Mr. Daniel Biss (State Representative), Mr. George Van Dusen (Mayor of Skokie), Mr. Pramod Shah (Village Trustee), Mr. Randall Roberts (Village Trustee), and Mr. Jerry Pope (College Advisor for Niles West).


During the Event, Latinos in skokie also held a formal award ceremony to present a special recognition (LIS Amigo Awards) to the following personalities : Skokie Mayor George Van Dusen; Ms. Fran Roehm, Manager of SkokieNet; Ms. Corrie Wallace, Director of the ELL Parent Center; Ms. Luisa Karamighovanloo from Niles West High School.

The current active board members of the Latinos in Skokie organization are: Ms. Mercedes Fernandez as President, Dr. Liliana Fargo as Vice president and Chair of the Education commission, Ms. Martina Osorio as Treasury and Chair of the Housing commission, and Ms. Alejandra Salazar as Chair of the Immigration commission.

Latinos in Skokie is a non-for-profit civic organization that aims to integrate the Latino communities in Skokie and North Suburban areas, as well as to promote the preservation of cultural traditions and to celebrate cultural diversity.
