Evanston Teen Arrested for Loaded Gun After Chase

The teen discarded the handgun while being chased by police after he ran away when they tried to stop them, police said.

A 16-year-old from Evanston was arrested for having a loaded gun after leading officers on a foot chase Thursday afternoon, according to police.

The incident occurred at about 2:30 p.m. Thursday in the 2000 block of Emerson Street, according to a press release from theEvanston Police Department. A known subject was riding a bike in the road and interfering with traffic. When officers tried to stop him, he got off the bike and ran away.

While chasing the teen, officers saw him reach into his waistband and “discard a firearm,” according to the release. Police then found a loaded .22 caliber handgun, pictured above, in the 1800 block of Brown Avenue.

The boy’s name is not being released because he is a juvenile. He was charged with aggravated unlawful use of weapons, a class 4 felony, as well as several other misdemeanor weapons offenses He was detained in custody and will appear in juvenile court, police said.

“This arrest is a direct result of the Evanston Police Department’s strategy of an enhanced police presence and use of investigative stops, also sometimes referred to as “Stop & Frisk” to reduce crimes of violence and persons illegally possessing firearms that pose a threat to the community,” the release states.
