Crain's: Wealthier Suburbs Could Benefit from ComEd Rate Design

The ComEd capacity charge is expected to rise 350 percent starting next June, which according to Crain's, could impact smaller households much more than larger ones.

Households using smaller amounts of electricity could end up paying more than suburban "McMansions" by this time next year, reports Crain's Chicago Business.

The reason being, according to Crain's, is ComEd's rate design. Next June, the price to buy electricity during peak demand times is expected to soar, but because ComEd allocates the capacity charge evenly across all households regardless of how much power they use, the owner of a "McMansion" may actually pay less per kilowatt hour than a smaller home.
