Fine Restaurants Slated For Mall On Old Orchard 's Edge

The new mall proposed for the western edge of Westfield Old Orchard Mall, on the site of an existing office tower, will likely contain sit-down restaurants and rental units as well as retail.

Michael Levin, a principal with Development Management Associates, which is working on redeveloping the property, said Friday that plans are still being formulated, but they call for the office building to be torn down and a new mixed-use building of retail, residential and dining to be built.

"I think you can do a lot better than a 30-year-old office building on the site," he said, adding he was estimating the age of the building. "Sites get redeveloped all the time."

Levin is working with owner Seth Singerman of Singerman Real Estate LLC, and he said they are still in the planning stages. At this point, they have not determined how many residential units will be built, but are leaning more toward rentals than condos. The number of stores, or whether there will be an anchor tenant, has not been determined, he said. He declined to give a number of projected square feet, but Crain's Chicago Business earlier reported it at about 120,000 square feet.

Asked whether the mix would include dining, he said, "Yes, and they'd be high quality restaurants, not fast food."

DMA does not yet have a timeline for when plans will be finalized.
