Rabbi Turns Blog Into Book On Israel, Palestine

Rabbi Brant Rosen of the Jewish Reconstructionist Congregation has turned his blog into a book on Israel-Palestine relations. Titled 'Wrestling in the Daylight,' the book came out this fall.

Evanston Rabbi Brant Rosen started his blog in 2006, writing about Judaism and social justice.

Six years later, he's collected his posts into a book that came out this fall, titled Wrestling in the Daylight. Including not just Rosen's writing but comments from his readers, the book focuses on his own changing opinions of Israel and Palestine after conflict broke out in 2008.

The leader of the spoke to WBEZ last week.

"I really started the blog as a way of communicating with my congregation," Rosen told WBEZ.

He shared articles he was interested in and posted wide-ranging musings on subjects beyond simply Judaism. Between 2008 and 2010, however, much of the discussion on his blog centered around the ongoing the conflict between Israel and Palestine.

"Shortly after I began writing a blog, I underwent a strong break with my previously held assumptions about Palestine," Rosen told WBEZ. Although he had started out as a supporter of Israel, the 22-day military campaign Israel launched against Gaza in 2008 "felt like nothing short of oppression," Rosen said.
