Rifath Khan Receives Lincolnwood Human Relations Commission Award

Skokie, IL - Rifath Khan, CEO for The Douglas Center was awarded the Lincolnwood Human Relations Commission Award. The award was presented to Ms. Khan at the annual Village of Lincolnwood board meeting. Each year the Human Relations Commission Award invites nominations of individuals for this award. After consideration of the nominations received the commission awarded Rifath Khan the Lincolnwood Human Relations Commission Award for her outstanding personal leadership and accomplishments in public service and for promoting understanding, mutual respect and neighborly cooperation.

The Lincolnwood Village Human Relations Commission was created to encourage understanding and respect amongst residents of Lincolnwood with various racial, ethnic, cultural and religious backgrounds. The Commission sponsors human relations activities through the year. These activities provide an opportunity for all residents to celebrate the community’s ethnic and cultural diversity. 

The Douglas Center, a non-profit organization located in Skokie, Illinois, provides day programs for individuals with intellectual, developmental and physical disabilities.  The center offers pre-vocational skills and work training (including sheltered workshops), Supported Employment program, “Art From The Heart” Creations program, “Young at Heart” Seniors program as well as developmental rehabilitation for adults of all ages.

The Douglas Center opened its doors in 1999. Today, they provide a home away from home for the many hard working and dedicated individuals it serves. Their comprehensive programming, clinical services, training programs, employment opportunities and Seniors programs are focused on assisting each individual in the management of their disabilities and building of self-esteem while developing and/or improving existing social, work and independent living skills. The Douglas Center serves individuals living with disabilities in the Chicago Metropolitan and suburban area.

Ms. Khan thanked the commission for recognizing the work being done in human services and urged them to continue to educate the public on the needs of individuals with disabilities. “I am honored and deeply humbled to receive the Lincolnwood Human Relations Commission Award, “stated Rifath Khan, Chief Executive Officer of The Douglas Center. “Throughout my career I have been committed to serving and advocating for individuals with special needs. This has been a tremendous journey and wonderful blessing. ”
