Number 4: Skokie Patch's Biggest Stories of 2012

Our fourth biggest story happened in Wyoming, but had a Skokie connection.

Nick Ungar was described as being the toughest guy at Niles North High School.

"He had the image of being the toughest guy [at Niles North High School]," said Steve Kogen, who was Ungar's best friend. "But he was basically a big giant teddy bear once you got to know him; he was rough on the outside, but soft on the inside."

Ungar was involved in a shoot out with police in Powell, Wyo. He was fatally shot and killed on Feb. 9 around 7:30 a.m.

"He was always there when you needed him," Kogen said. "A lot of people were afraid of him, and he was one of the most popular kids at our school. He made a lot of people laugh."
