More than 250 of such commemorative events take place this year across the country. Sixteen walks occur in Illinois, raising an expected $2.8 million for the cause. Attendees are encouraged to raise a suggested minimum donation of $200, but everyone and anyone is allowed to participate.

"In the north shore there was definitely a need and a want to do something breast cancer awareness associated," said Amy Kramer, one of the coordinators for the event and Senior Income Development Representative for the American Cancer Society, as she explained why there was a seperate walk started in the north shore last year.
