which requires its employees to follow customers — and their carts — out to their vehicles.

The service is mandatory, according to couponsinthenews.com, and whether you want the help or not, your bagger is expected to follow you out to your vehicle. The service has nothing to do with keeping track of carts, according to Coupons in the News.

"We understand that this is a very different service and it might take our customers some time to understand that we want this to be the norm," said a Jewel customer service representative in the article.

  • “I will not shop at jewel if they do that,” Sharon Serences Newman wrote on Facebook.
  • “I do not like the service. It is annoying. I came to the store alone and I would like to leave alone. If I was to ASK for the help it would be a different story. I hate this service. They should really get rid of it before they lose customers to Dominicks,” Bob wrote on Patch.
  • “This has happened to me at the Highland Park Jewel. I found it unnerving and asked them to please let me return my cart myself. I often go shopping at night but feel safer by myself than having someone come right to my car with me...even if they are an employee,” Amanda K. O’Brien wrote on Facebook.
  • “I can not stand being badgered at places I shop. I expect courteous, competent service at the register and a clean store, That's it. I will stop going to Jewel if they impose this upon me. I'm sure I speak for many shoppers when I say that I enjoy friendly service, but prefer to be left alone. Fortunately, the Jewel I shop at right now only asks. I'm fine with them having it available,” Billy wrote on Patch.
  • “This is actually normal practice in Ecuador. The baggers don't get paid much and are hoping for a tip. What's the big deal? At night it would be an extra pair of eyes especially for a woman alone,” Jennifer Murphy Alvarado wrote on Facebook.
