American Discovery: The European Mind and the Discovery of the West
At NSSC, Northfield Location:
Joyce Haworth, Historian and Instructor, College of Lake County
"In the beginning, all the World was America," wrote 17th century philosopher John Locke. The existence of a massive, unknown continent far to the west fired the imaginations of European scientists and artists and shaped how they looked at the world. This class will examine images of America as seen in the work of writers and thinkers in England, such as Shakespeare's The Tempest, Thomas More's Utopia and Locke's "state of nature." It will examine how Europeans saw themselves and their world during the time of the conquest of America.
