From Thursday, November 21st through
Sunday, November 24th, The Children’s Theatre of Winnetka proudly presents the
full production of the Broadway classic, Fiddler on the Roof.  Written by Joseph Stein and based on
Sholem Aleichem’s short story, Tevye and
His Daughters
, Fiddler is among Broadway’s
enduring masterpieces and a celebration of life and its challenges.

Set in a small Jewish village in Russia
in 1905, the story centers on Tevye, a poor dairyman and father of five
daughters, and his attempts to maintain his family and religious traditions
while outside influences encroach upon their lives. He must cope with the
strong-willed actions of his three eldest daughters—each one's choice of husband
moves them further away from the customs of his Jewish faith—as well as with
the Tsar’s edict to evict the Jews from their village.

When it first appeared on Broadway in
1964, Fiddler swept the Tony's with nine "Best" awards,
including Best Musical for its remarkable score which includes such enchanting and
memorable songs as "Matchmaker, Matchmaker," "If I were a Rich
Man," "Sunrise, Sunset," “Tradition,” and "Far from the
Home I Love."

Talented and beloved veterans Cathy
Hirschmann and Toby Nicholson will direct two casts consisting of 75 children
between the fourth and eighth grades from throughout New Trier Township.  With nearly a dozen more children
comprising the stage crew, elaborate sets built and painted entirely by
parents, extraordinarily detailed costumes as well as two young fiddlers, CTW’s
production continues its tradition of remarkable and professional caliber
theater.  In fact, Fiddler will
be CTW’s 77th production in its 38th year.

CTW’s four-decade history is filled
with dozens of marvelous shows that have allowed thousands of children to
experience live theater for the first time, whether as performers, crew members,
or members of the audience.  CTW
has been the springboard for dozens of professional careers in show business.  Among the more recent are Betsy Morgan,
star of numerous Broadway productions including Les Miserables, A Little Night
Music and The Little Mermaid; Elizabeth Lyons, breakout country music singer;
Kevin Quinn, American Idol contestant and current performer in Steppenwolf’s
Lord of the Flies; Corey Grant, Broadway star as Frankie Valli in Jersey Boys;
and, the star of AT&T commercials and new Saturday Night Live cast member,
Beck “It’s Not Complicated” Bennett.

In addition to six performances open to
the public, CTW will perform for the residents of the Presbyterian Home and welcome
two schools from communities without strong children’s theatres to call their
own; LEARN Excel School from Chicago’s North Lawndale community, and Oak
Terrace Elementary School in Highwood.
As LEARN Excel Principal Sekou Robertson put it, “Our students look
forward to visiting the Children’s Theatre of Winnetka every year.  It is a great treat for our children
who do not often have the chance to see and experience real musical
theatre.  We feel very fortunate to
Winnetka families who afford us the wonderful opportunity.”
