International Security Affairs for History Buffs: Evaluating Small Wars

At NSSC, Nielsen Campus:

Michael Zimmerman, M.S., London School of Economics,
Political Analyst, Journalist

Political analyst Michael Zimmerman will present a sequence
of classes dealing with deterrence, asymmetric warfare, the Vietnam War, and
more recent challenges. Deterrence was a focus during the Cold War when use of
nuclear weapons was a great danger; more recently, however, defense analysts
have tried applying that concept to more ambiguous conflicts in the current
international environment. Asymmetric warfare has always been in play and is a
complex security topic; today's situation is extreme, with the US challenged
repeatedly by enemies or contenders with very different levels and types of
power and influence. Attitudes about America's military engagement in Vietnam
are deeply embedded, but we'll take a fresh look at the nature of how that
conflict was engaged along with alternative approaches, looking at motives for
the war, strategies utilized, and results. More recent US military engagements
will also be discussed.
