Illinois State Legislature: Repeal Unfair Election Code

"Of the People, By the People, For the People"

Every vote counts! No voter should be punished for performing her or his civic duty of voting.

I decided to run for Congress in 2012. Fortunately for me, I did not vote in the 2012 primaries as I intended to do! If I would have voted in the primaries, I would have been legally prohibited to pursue elected office in my 9th Congressional District of Illinois, United States House of Representatives. The Illinois Election Code, which became effective on March 30, 2012, is unfair for aspiring individuals seeking elected office for the first time like myself. For example, if a person voted at the 2012 General Primary Election, that voter could not appear as either an independent candidate or as a different established party’s candidate on the 2012 General Election ballot. Basically, this means if I had voted in the 2012 general primary election, I would not have been able to run for Congress.

There was a time when a person could not vote if they didn’t own property, if they were a different ethnic background, or simply if they were a female instead of a male. No voter should be punished or intimidated for casting a vote which would have made a voter ineligible to run for office.

You and I deserve the basic constitutional privilege to be allowed to try to be on the ballot so we can have our say. We deserve real leadership and accountability from our politicians. Ballot access is a good place to start.

Please help me sign this petition to compel our Illinois legislature, courts and the governor to repeal the amendment section 7-43 of Election Code (10 ILCS 5/7-43) - Illinois Public Act 97-0681.

Let’s leave a fairer, less complicated and democratic election process for our future, our country, and our children! Indeed, there is much more to be accomplished for genuine election reform! Unnecessarily complicated and confusing election codes, gerrymandering, and more, needs to be addressed.

With your support, we can start the first step to meaningful election reform for a better tomorrow!
