Niles Township Community Garden Yields Fine Veggies

Tomatoes, eggplants, spinach, chard and kale are all coming up in abundance at Niles Township community garden.

Residents of the township signed up for plots in the garden before the growing season, and supplied their own seeds, said James Tassev, a township employee. The township provided the water.

"They're all community members. This year there aren't any food pantry clients," said Amy Wagner, director of the township food pantry.

Many of the gardeners have an abundance of food ripen at once, and donate some to the food pantry.

"One of the things we struggle with in a food pantry is getting enough fresh produce," she said.

In former years, volunteers raised the vegetables for the food pantry. This year, the plots were allotted to community members, and there was a waiting list for them, she said.

The garden is located behind the Niles Township building at 5050 Main Street, Skokie. Niles Township includes portions of Niles, Morton Grove, Skokie and Lincolnwood.
