Do you know a teacher who goes above and beyond what's required of them in the classroom?

If so, you should nominate that stellar educator for a Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching. Parents, students, administrators and other teachers can all nominate individuals for this prestigious award.

Currently open are nominations for fourth through eighth grade teachers who teach full-time at a school in Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry or Will county. Teachers can come from public or private schools.

The prestigious award comes with induction into the Golden Apple Academy of Educators, recognition on an hour-long WTTW program, a paid spring quarter sabbatical at Northwestern University in Evanston where recipients may take as many courses as they wish in any subjects they choose and a $3,000 cash award.

Nominating a teacher is easy, just fill out the online application.

One of the 10 honorees in 2013 was John Kretsos, a chemistry teacher at Niles North High School in Niles Township High School District 219.
