Niles West Alums Make 'Turkey Bowl' A Tradition

This is the 15th year this group of Niles West alums and friends have celebrated a tradition.

This year, as in each of the past 15 years, a group of friends who graduated from Niles West High School in the late 1980s and early 1990s are getting together to celebrate a Thanksgiving morning tradition.

1989 Graduate Ritchie Cordero explained, in an email to Patch.com:

Back in 1999, one of our high school friends, Vickie Karkazis, had the brilliant idea to meet up with friends early Thanksgiving morning to get together, catch up, and play football before spending time with our families for the long Thanksgiving weekend.  The first year started out mostly with a core of Niles West High School friends, but since then, it has grown to include more friends, significant others, and children!  I’m happy to say that the tradition has continued every year since 1999, and the number of participants have stayed consistent over the years to make it our favorite Thanksgiving holiday tradition!

This year will be the 15th year of our annual tradition!  I've attached pictures from our tradition over the last 15 years.

Some of those pictured in the photos are (along with their year of graduation from Niles West):

  • Ritchie Cordero, 1989
  • Rosette Cordero, 1992
  • Vickie Karkazis, 1992
  • Christine Mackris (formerly Karkazis), 1994
  • Grace Chong, 1992
  • Joel Fogelson, 1989
  • John Liu, 1989
  • Marsha Liu, 1989
  • Christ Belesiotis, 1994
  • Sharon Bak, 1990
Happy Thanksgiving, and may everyone's good traditions continue.
