Team Trivia Tuesdays at the Village Inn

There’s no playing field. No expensive equipment required. Casual attire preferred. What type of team competition involves accuracy without dexterity, points without a scoreboard, and encourages players to eat and drink during the game?

Just before 8:00 pm every Tuesday at the Village Inn (8050 Lincoln Ave, Skokie IL) the host from Whaddayaknow? Free Team Trivia hands out the materials, explains the rules, and then kicks off a two-hour brain game for teams of two-to-six players.

Matthew: No smart phones or reference materials of any kind allowed!

Jerry: “Who’s got a pen? I left mine at home.”

  Tom: “Here’s a pen.”

Linda: “I’ve got spare scratch paper.”

Mark: “Did anyone check their Facebook for today’s bonus point?”

Rob: “I did that earlier. It’s Roger Bannister ... first sub-four-minute mile.”

If you are the type of person who has been looking for a way to get some mileage out of all the “useless knowledge” you’ve accumulated over the years, an evening of Live Team Trivia at the Village Inn Pizzeria Sports Bar and Grill is perfect for you and your friends.

After each question is read, you and your teammates have about two-and-a-half minutes (the duration of one song) to consider the question, rack your brains, come up with alternatives, agree on an answer, write it on a slip of paper, and hand it in.

Matthew: Six US presidents share the same first name ... what is it?

Mark: “How about William? There’s Harrison, Taft, Clinton ...”

Rob: “John, maybe? Adams, Kennedy, Tyler ...”

Jerry: “Got it! James! Madison, Monroe, Polk, Buchanan, Garfield, Carter!”

Covering a mixture of academic topics (history, geography, science, literature) and pop culture (movies, music, television, sports), hosted trivia games are enjoying a popularity boom at pubs and sports bars around the nation. At least six Chicagoland companies are now offering weekly competitions at more than 100 city and suburban locations.

All ages are welcome – but it helps to have players whose experience spans many decades. Whether you have a PhD or a GED makes no difference in this game. All that matters is that you have a knack for remembering things everyone else has forgotten.
