A Soapy Tail--Or, Let's Wash Some Dogs, Say CARE Volunteers

C.A.R.E.'s upcoming June 23 Dog Wash gets a sudsy boost from Evanston entrepreneur Heidi Danos, owner of Dirty Knees Soap Co.

Dirty dogs. They happen to the best of us dog owners. Luckily C.A.R.E. has two pieces of good news.

The first piece is, C.A.R.E.'s Summer Dog Wash is just around the corner. Dog scrubbers and dryers--all C.A.R.E. volunteers--will muster from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 23, to wash dogs on Shelter grounds at 2310 Oakton in Evanston.

For the modest price of $10 (regardless of size), you will be able to bring home a sparkly clean hound. An additional $10 will get their nails trimmed, too. Such a deal!

The second piece of good news is that Heidi Danos, an Evanston entrepreneur who recently launched a handmade mail-order soap business called Dirty Knees Soap Co., will be donating a portion of her June and July sales to C.A.R.E.

Heidi's most recent addition to her line of handmade soaps is Dirty Paws, a soap for... you guessed it, dogs. Cedarwood, lavender and citronella promote a healthy coat while helping to scare away bugs.

"After a whiff, you might be tempted to try it yourself," Heidi says. "But that's okay.  It's also perfect for campers and those spending a lot of time outdoors." Dirty Knees Soap is handmade in small batches with natural and eco-conscious ingredients, and no palm oil.

Heidi's C.A.R.E. connection comes from her adopted dog, Sam, a "terrific Great Dane, Collie, Dachshund mix," she says. "Seriously!" (Out of sheer curiosity, she did a DNA test.)

So. Hope all C.A.R.E.'s dog-owned friends in and around Evanston will mark their calendars for a June 23 scrub. See you there!
