On the Beat (Again) with the Windy City Rollers

Johngy and Scott are back for a second night of action with the Windy City Rollers.

The last time Scott Beatty and I enjoyed a night of Windy City Rollers action, we were novices, trying to absorb as much knowledge as possible.  We came away impressed with everything in general about the league.  The action was exciting, the production was excellent and the women skaters were dedicated, fun and athletic.  Last week, we went back for our second night of WCR action and tried to concentrate more on the action of the games.

The Fury remained undefeated at 3-0 with a 227-112 win over the Double Crossers who are winless at 0-3.  In the middle of the standings, the Manic Attackers improved to 2-1 with their 168-76 victory over Hell’s Belles who are 1-2.  The Most Valuable Players were Fury Captain Ska Face and Zoe Trocious of the Manic Attackers.

We actually started to understand jams, points, penalties and the rest of the sport.  What seemed chaotic and unorganized last time, now became much clearer.  I have to credit WindyCityRollers.com for being a fantastic and helpful website and also the several skaters with whom we have spoken.

Scott has been naturally drawn to the Double Crossers, although his support has not helped them get any wins.  I always just root against any of Scott’s teams.  The cool part is now we get the sport.  We know when our teams are doing well.

The league in general and the individual women skaters all get it.  The rules and play are explained and demonstrated before the bouts.  A game book is available to explain everything and identify the players.  The league does everything to attract, educate and entertain fans.

The skaters appear between games to pose for pictures and sign autographs.  Also, while two teams are playing, random members of the other teams can be seen skating around the concourse, mingling with fans or attending to business.

I have to admit, I never thought I would be this interested in roller derby.  I am actually disappointed that I will miss the upcoming Playoffs on May 4.  The second place Manic Attackers will face the third place Hell’s Belles at 6 p.m., while the first place undefeated Fury will play the fourth place Double Crossers at 7:30 p.m.  The winners will face off on June 8 for the Ivy Cup.
