Vote to Help the Midway Drive-In Theater!

I am a bit young to have gone to drive-in theaters during their peak years.  Still, you can count me in as a big fan of the drive-in theater.

There are approximately 350 drive-ins left in the United States.  That figure is in danger of being drastically lowered as drive-ins are facing a huge challenge in the form of the movie industry’s switch from film to digital.  This conversion costs roughly $80,000.

That conversion is much more challenging for drive-ins (as opposed to regular theater complexes).  A more powerful digital projection bulb, an internet connection and other needs are among the requirements and obstacles drive-ins face.

Some good news comes from the Honda Drive-In Project, which will be donating five digital projectors.  More good news is that we can help decide where those five projectors go.

I am voting for the Midway Drive-In, in Sterling, IL, a scenic two hour trip from Skokie.  The Midway Drive-In is the oldest standing drive-in screen in Illinois.  It delivers the complete nostalgic experience of the American drive-in theater.

Upon entering the Midway Drive-In, you immediately hear classic oldies over the sound system.  There is a kid's playground in front of the 90 foot wide screen.  The National Anthem precedes the film presentation.  At intermission, we are treated to the "Dancing Hot Dog" and other vintage ads.

One concession is made to modern technology.  Gone are the speakers to hang from the car door.  At the Midway Drive-In, you get all of the sounds through your FM car radio.

The mention of modern technology brings me back to the Honda Drive-In Project.  Everyone is allowed to vote twice per day, once by voting online at the Honda Drive-In Project and once by texting Vote80 to 444999.  All voting ends on September 9, 2013, which gives everyone 20 more days (or 40 more votes!).  Do I really need to quote the Chicago motto of "vote early and vote often?"

Honda will be donating these projectors somewhere.  I am always in favor of supporting local businesses.  Since there are no drive-ins in Skokie, I am encouraging everyone to support the Midway and cast your votes.
