Arlington Heights District 25 Reacts to Connecticut Tragedy

Recent reports put the death toll at 26 people, 20 of them children, who attended Sandy Hook Elemenary School in Newton, Connecticut. Palatine school officials, and parents, reacts to the devastating news.

As news spread across the country about the tragedy that befell a Connecticut elmenatary school Friday, District 25 school officials have commented on the tragedy.

"When tragedies such as these occur, we are all deeply saddened and impacted by the news... as parents, as educators and as members of a community.  The victims, their families and their community are in our thoughts and hearts," a release on the District 25 website stated.

The statement went on to say that the school district did not share the news with students during the school day and provided a link to help parents communicate with their children about the situation

"Next week, our staff will be alert and sensitive to students who seem to be struggling with events [of today].  After learning of the news, if you believe your child needs additional support, please feel free to contact your school principal," the release went on to say.

I am your Arlington Heights Patch editor, but also a parent myself, and I can't fathom receiving a call learning that one of my children was in the middle of such a horrifying, life-threatening situation-and for a time as some parents in Connecticut had today-to wait to learn their child's fate.

My heart breaks for the families who lost their beloved children today.

I hope we can all take a step back today, and let our children and all others important to us in our lives, know how much we care about them.

If you would like to share your thoughts in the comments section below, I invite you to.

The tragic mass murder at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut underscores that fact that in 1996 our own congress turned public schools into gun free zones, making them ideal killing grounds for criminals and lunatics. (Where they will only find unarmed victims.) Please contact your legislators and encourage them to rescind the Gun Free School Zones Act (reenacted by Congress, Sep. 30, 1996 --P.L. 104-208.) If even a minority of school teachers were armed (as they are in Israel and South Africa) then slaughters like this could be prevented, or at least minimized.
