Baby Jesus Taken and a Chunk of Stump Swiped

This week's unusual crimes from our Patch region.

Local police departments provided the following reports. In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation and not evidence of guilt.

Someone took the baby Jesus from the nativity scene located outside a Des Plaines church a few days before Christmas. The figure was made out of plaster and had a light blue blanket on it.

Cash and a box of coffee were stolen from an unlocked car in Evanston.

A man allegedly stole 52 boxes of candy from an Evanston Sam's Club, worth $870.

A $200 memorial plaque was stolen from the oldest tree in Wilmette, which is dead, along with a portion of the stump that was removed with a chainsaw.

A man delivering Chinese food to a customer in Des Plaines left his car running when someone entered the vehicle and drove off. The victim told police he did not see the thief, but heard him or her honk the horn on the vehicle while driving away.

Two men allegedly robbed their drinking companion at gunpoint in Evanston. One of the offenders pulled out a gun and stole $300 cash, a cell phone, driver's license, set of keys and the man's jeans. The victim grabbed his jeans back from the two robbers and ran into a nearby house.

A flute was stolen from the band room at an Oak Park school.

Skokie police charged an Evanston man after they stopped him and allegedly found about 17 grams of marijuana hidden inside his pant leg.

A Morton Grove man reported a theft from a hotel room he rented. He allegedly told police that he rented the room for a friend to use to charge money for sex and that she took a TV from the room before she left.
