Police charged an 18-year-old Evanston man Thursday in the shooting death of Cardereon Preister, 21, who was killed outside his home in the 1700 block of Leland Avenue last week.

Matthew A. Dubose, 18, of the 1800 block of Hovland Court, is charged with first-degree murder, according to police.

“Preister’s death is believed to be in retaliation for a previous meeting that took place over the summer between Dubose and the victim to exchange drugs and money, for a firearm that the victim had,” Evanston Police Cmdr. Jason Parrott said in a press release. “The exchange went awry between the two, which in turn lead to the murder of Preister several weeks later.”

Police found Preister shot in the back around 11 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10. He was transported to Evanston NorthShore University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly afterwards, according to police.

Preister had one child and another baby on the way, and worked at Bryn Mawr Country Club in Lincolnwood over the summer. Preister found the job through the city's Youth & Young Adult Division, where he told city staff that he had dropped out of ETHS, and was hoping to complete his GED, according to program manager Kevin Brown.

Preister and another Evanston man were arrested and charged with residential burglary after they allegedly broke into a north side Evanston home in March 2012, according to police

Dubose is expected to appear in Cook County Circuit Court in Skokie for a preliminary hearing at 9 a.m. Monday, Sept. 30, in room 105.
