Known Sex Offender Follows Teen

Girl notifies police about man after refusing ride offer while walking home.

Police responded to the 8300 block of Christiana Avenue regarding a report of a registered sex offender who had followed a teen home around 4 p.m. Aug. 10.

According to the report, the 18-year-old teen was walking northbound near Oakton Street and McCormick Boulevard when a man asked the girl if she wanted a ride home and for her phone number. The victim denied his request and soon recognized the man as a known sex offender who lived in Skokie.

The teen notified police and told them she knew the man as Anthony Gary of the 3400 block of Main Street. Upon further investigation, police discovered that John Anthony Gary was the alleged suspect's actual name and he had a listed residence in the 1000 block of Pulaski Avenue in Chicago.

Gary, who is in his late 30s, bald and drives a Jeep Cherokee, is listed online in the Illinois' sex offender database. He had been charged with aggravated criminal sexual abuse of a minor between the ages of 13 and 16.

At time of publication, no charges were filed in the recent incident.
